Is Orville the Emperor Penguin (large) too much Penguin?

For Christmas, 2023, I gave Orville, the Large Emperor Penguin, to my girl. She had recently returned from Antarctica and really enjoyed seeing the big guys like Orville in the wild. She's always loved the Gentoo and Adelaides, so I thought that Orville was the next logical thing.

Firstly, Orville is a very handsome, exquisitely soft, very friendly and lovable. I think anyone who loves penguins will appreciate his good looks and quirky personality.

BUT, and this is a big but, Orville takes up a lot of room in the freezer (and we have one of those big ones). Penguins like the cold - here in New England we're having a very warm winter. I thought he'd be happy living in our backyard with the other birds but no, he insists on hanging out in the freezer most of the day. It doesn't leave a lot of room for pizzas and he blew through all our frozen fish in one night.

The fish thing is a whole other issue. As he is, in essence, a stuffed bird, I didn't think he'd have a big appetite but I quickly learned otherwise. He goes through three packages of those Pepperidge Farm Goldfish nightly, plus at least ten trays of ice cubes. He likes the colossal frozen raw shrimp and eats almost two full bags daily. We thought he'd drink Polar Cola but no, he's strictly a Mountain Dew kinda guy.

All in all, we can't say enough good about our penguin. We wish he got a long a little better with the cats, but they do seem to be working things out.

Love love love!

Orville, now known as Fred… is delightful! My kid was over the moon! He is lovely to cuddle, his belly is perfect! We also have 2 of the large Golden Retrievers, and they will be celebrating their first birthday in Dec 25th!!!
